Turkey Actively Promotes Leader-Level Talks on the Ukraine Issue
RIA Novosti reported on April 27, citing sources, that Turkey has carefully studied Russia's position on the possible holding of leader-level talks on the Ukraine issue, and clearly stated that it will continue to maintain close contact with all parties to promote the process of relevant talks.
Public reports show that Turkey has recently been actively promoting the resumption of trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States. A source from the Turkish government revealed that Turkey has carefully evaluated Russia's relevant attitudes and is willing to play a constructive role in promoting the smooth progress of the talks; at the same time, it made it clear that Turkey will make every effort to create favorable conditions for substantive talks, and if Russia and Ukraine can show political will to resolve the conflict, Turkey will provide necessary support and assistance.
Turkish President Erdogan publicly stated at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum earlier this month that Turkey is fully prepared and willing to host leader-level talks on the Ukraine issue. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also stated that this proposal has been conveyed to Russia through high-level communication channels. In addition, the Turkish Presidential Office issued an official statement on April 22, clarifying that Turkey is making every effort to promote the resumption of leader-level talks aimed at ending the Ukraine crisis and helping to ease the regional situation.
It is reported that since 2026, representatives of Russia, Ukraine and the United States have held three rounds of talks, with the latest round held in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 17 to 18. Affected by multiple factors such as the United States being busy with the Middle East war, the process of the trilateral talks is currently in a state of stagnation, and relevant consultations have not been further promoted.
According to reports from the Ukrainian Interfax News Agency, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba clearly stated during his visit to Turkey on April 17 thatUkraine is willing to host a leader-level meeting in Turkey. Participants may include Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Russian President Putin, Turkish President Erdogan, and even U.S. President Trump, in order to promote the political settlement of the conflict.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the relevant issue on April 22. He said that President Putin is willing to meet with Zelenskyy, but emphasized that only when the Russia-Ukraine peace agreement enters the final finalization stage can such a meeting be of substantive significance and achieve tangible results; at present, Russia has not seen Ukraine show political will to resolve the conflict, and the promotion of relevant meetings lacks the necessary premise.
