**Source**: National Business Daily
On the local time of May 29, U.S. President Trump posted on social media that May 30 would be Elon Musk's last day at the Department of Government Efficiency, and he would hold a press conference with Musk in the Oval Office at 13:30 Eastern Time on the 30th.
On the local time of May 28, U.S. entrepreneur and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk, officially announced his "departure" just 128 days after taking office as head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency on January 20.

Musk posted on his social media platform X that he was about to leave the Trump administration and no longer continue to serve as a special government employee. In addition, Musk thanked U.S. President Trump in the post and said that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team would continue to work across the government.
Previously, a White House official said the White House would begin processing Musk's departure on the evening of the 28th. U.S. media reported that as a special government employee, Musk's term was limited to 130 days, possibly expiring as early as May 30.
### Tesla's Sales Slump, Starship's Failed Flights
**Musk Returns to His Business Empire**
Musk invested nearly $300 million last year to support Trump and several Republican candidates and served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency. However, his reform initiatives and political stance in the federal government have brought a lot of "trouble" to himself and his companies.
Since March, protests against Tesla have emerged in many places in the U.S. and Europe, putting pressure on the company's sales and causing its first annual delivery decline last year. Tesla's financial report released on April 22 showed that the company's revenue in the first quarter of this year fell 9% year-on-year, automotive business revenue fell 20% year-on-year, and net profit plummeted 71% year-on-year.

On April 30, insiders even revealed that due to Tesla's falling stock price and some investors' dissatisfaction with CEO Musk's focus on the White House, Tesla's board of directors contacted several headhunting firms and began seriously considering finding a successor for Musk. After the news broke, Tesla Chairman Robin Denholm denied it, calling it "completely untrue."
On May 20, Musk said he remained committed to serving as Tesla's CEO for the next five years unless he died and would drastically cut political donations, indicating he was shifting his focus back to his business empire in response to investors' concerns about his divided attention. On May 24, Musk announced he had returned to a full-time work schedule.
Tesla's sales have stagnated, and the Starship test flights have not succeeded. Since January this year, SpaceX's new-generation heavy-lift rocket "Starship" has failed three consecutive test flights. During the ninth test flight on the local time of May 27, Musk was present at SpaceX's factory in Texas, but there was still no good news: the first-stage booster exploded, and although the second-stage spacecraft entered space, it later went out of control. After the failed test flight, Musk said he would accelerate the test flight pace, planning to carry out a launch mission every 3 to 4 weeks.
### Department of Government Efficiency: Unmet Goals
**Became a Scapegoat**
On January 20 this year, Trump assigned Musk to take the lead in establishing the Department of Government Efficiency, with the core goal of "cutting redundant spending and improving administrative efficiency," and successively launched an accounting audit storm on multiple federal government departments, including the Treasury Department and the Agency for International Development. Recently, insiders have disclosed that Musk's role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency in the Trump administration has left him "exhausted and annoyed."
The Washington Post reported on the local time of the 27th that Musk said in an interview that reducing the size of the federal government was more difficult than expected and expressed regret for the severe criticism his Department of Government Efficiency had received. Musk said, "The state of the federal bureaucracy is much more severe than I expected. I knew there were problems, but I have to say that at least trying to推动改善现状 (promote improvements) in Washington, D.C., is really a tough battle."
Musk mentioned that the response to the Department of Government Efficiency's initiatives has been extremely strong. "The Department of Government Efficiency has simply become a 'scapegoat' for all problems." "No matter where there is a problem, even if it has nothing to do with us, we will be blamed."
At the same time, Musk's claims of drastically saving costs and eliminating waste in government operations have been proven exaggerated. U.S. media reported that as his influence in Washington diminished, it was clear he had failed to achieve many of his expected goals.
According to data from the Department of Government Efficiency website, as of April 20, the department had saved approximately $160 billion for the federal government, but this is less than one-fifth of the $1 trillion federal spending reduction target Musk previously announced. Another study shows that despite large-scale layoffs, agency closures, contract cuts, and public service reductions, the current government's spending since taking office has increased compared to the same period last year.
### Trump Downplays Musk's Criticism
On the local time of May 22, the U.S. House of Representatives, with a Republican majority, narrowly passed a large-scale tax and spending bill proposed by the Trump administration. The bill plans to cut taxes by $4 trillion and reduce spending by at least $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years. Critics warn that the bill will hit healthcare policies hard and significantly increase the federal debt.
Regarding this bill, Musk said in a media interview that it undermined his efforts to reduce the U.S. budget deficit. He said, "To be honest, I am disappointed with this large-scale spending bill. It not only does not reduce the budget deficit but further expands it, which also weakens the work being done by the Department of Government Efficiency team." Commenting on Trump's description of the bill as "big and beautiful," Musk further said, "I think a bill can be 'big' or 'beautiful,' but I don't know if it can be both."
On the 28th, when responding to Musk's质疑 (criticisms) of the bill, Trump downplayed his criticism, saying the bill must receive a large number of support votes and must pass in the House of Representatives.
