According to three Russian sources familiar with the peace talks, the conditions for ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine proposed by Russian President Putin include Western leaders' written commitment to stop NATO's eastward expansion and lift most of the sanctions on Russia.

A Russian source who knows the ideas of the top Kremlin officials said, "Putin is willing to achieve peace, but will not take any cost."

According to people familiar with the matter, Putin asked major Western countries to promise in writing not to promote the eastward expansion of the US-led NATO alliance - that is, to formally rule out the possibility of former Soviet republics such as Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova.

At the same time, Russia also demands that Ukraine remain neutral, the West lift some sanctions, resolve the frozen Russian sovereign assets issue, and protect Russian-speaking users in Ukraine.

One of the sources even warned that if Putin realizes he cannot reach a peace agreement on his own terms, he will seek to show the Ukrainians and Europeans through military victory that "peace tomorrow will be more painful."

Although the Kremlin has not responded to these remarks as of press time, Russia's recent actions and responses seem to be becoming increasingly tough.

In the early hours of last Sunday, Russia launched an air strike on Ukraine, using missiles and drones to strike several Ukrainian cities, including the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This is the largest air strike since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, killing at least 12 people and injuring many.

US President Trump has repeatedly stated that he is disappointed with it and warned Putin. He posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday, saying, "What Vladimir Putin didn't realize is that if it weren't for me, a lot of really bad things have happened in Russia, and I mean very bad. He was playing with fire."

Medvedev, vice chairman of the Russian Federation Security Conference, then responded hard on X: "Remarks about Trump's so-called Putin's 'playing with fire' and 'very bad things' happening in Russia. I only know one very bad thing - World War III. I hope Trump understands this!"

In addition, Putin and Russian officials have repeatedly stated that any peace agreement must resolve the "roots" of the conflict - in Russia's view, this means NATO's eastward expansion and Western support for Ukraine.

Kiev has repeatedly stated that Russia should not be granted a veto on its accession to NATO, and said it needs strong security guarantees from the West to curb potential Russia's future attacks.NATO has also said in the past that it will not change its "open door" policy because of Moscow's demands.
