On January 26, local time, U.S. President Trump posted on his social platform "Real Social" that because the South Korean Congress has not approved and implemented the previous trade agreement with the United States, the United States will increase the tariff rate levied on South Korean goods.
Trump said that the South Korean legislative body "failed to fulfill the agreement reached with the United States", saying that the agreement was reached with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on July 30, 2025, and was reconfirmed during his visit to South Korea on October 29, 2025.
Trump said that since South Korea has not passed the "historic trade agreement", he has decided to increase the tax rate on South Korean automobiles, lumber, pharmaceutical products and other reciprocal tariff items from 15% to 25%.
