Trump: Operation Colombia sounds good, action must be taken on Mexico

# Source: Wall Street Insights

After the lightning raid on Venezuela, Trump turned his "gun barrel" to other Latin American countries, threatening that a military operation in Colombia "sounds good" and that action must be taken against Mexico.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening local time, US President Donald Trump said Colombia has "tremendous problems". He claimed that the country's leader is "sick" and will not remain in office for long, adding that "a Colombia operation sounds good".

Trump also stated that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) must be renegotiated, calling it a "disaster". He noted that Mexico's drug cartels are extremely powerful, stressing that "action must be taken against Mexico" and that "Mexico has to shape up".

Trump further commented that Venezuela's oil production is at a low level, and oil companies are eager to enter the country. He said there is no need to launch a second strike on Venezuela, adding that the country will hold elections in due course. He mentioned that he has not spoken with (Venezuela's acting president) Rodriguez, who is cooperating with the US side. "We will manage and fix this country (Venezuela)," he stated.

## Colombia Deploys 30,000 Troops Along the Border

In the early hours of January 3, the US launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela, raiding the capital Caracas and capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. US President Donald Trump claimed that the US will "administer" Venezuela until a so-called "safe" transition is achieved. Multiple countries and international organizations, including Colombia, have strongly condemned the move.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Angie Rodriguez, Director of the Colombian Presidential Office, announced on the evening of January 3 that Colombia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on January 5 and proposed convening a special session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to address the impact of the evolving situation in Venezuela on regional stability.

Speaking at a press conference held in Cúcuta, a border city adjacent to Venezuela, on the same evening, Rodriguez said that in light of the escalating situation in Venezuela, Colombia, in addition to promoting the aforementioned meetings, has proposed convening a foreign ministers' meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Currently, Colombia holds the rotating presidency of CELAC.

Rodriguez stated that Colombia has activated a yellow alert for its medical system in border areas adjacent to Venezuela. The Colombian government has ordered the strengthening of humanitarian measures, deployed 30,000 troops along the Colombia-Venezuela border, and declared that the armed forces have entered a state of maximum combat readiness to respond to a potential escalation of the situation.
