Putin and Trump Hold an Hour-and-a-Half Phone Call Covering Multiple Issues

Assistant to the Russian President Ushakov reported to the outside world on the evening of the 29th that Russian President Putin and US President Trump officially held a phone call on the same day. The two sides fully exchanged their respective positions and views on key issues such as the recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, the direction of the Iranian situation, and the Ukraine issue.

According to Ushakov, at the beginning of the call, Putin strongly condemned the attempted assassination of Trump that occurred recently at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner and expressed his support for Trump.

During the call, Putin briefed Trump on the relevant progress of Russia's special military operation and clearly stated that Russia is ready to announce a ceasefire during the Victory Day period, which Trump expressed support for. Putin also mentioned that since the beginning of 2025, adhering to the principle of humanitarianism, Russia has transferred more than 20,000 remains of fallen soldiers to Ukraine, but has only received more than 500 remains of Russian soldiers from Ukraine. At the same time, Putin emphasized that the established goals of Russia's special military operation will surely be achieved, but Russia prefers to reach the above goals through peaceful negotiations. He believes that the continuation of the current conflict is artificially prolonged by Ukraine.

According to Ushakov, Trump elaborated on the US's views and positions on the Middle East situation to Putin during the call. Putin responded, believing that Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire in Iran and surrounding areas is of positive significance and will help stabilize the regional situation. At the same time, Putin clearly stated that the option of taking ground military action against Iran is completely unacceptable and poses extremely high security risks.

Ushakov stated that the phone call was initiated by Russia, lasted more than an hour and a half, and the two sides had a candid and pragmatic dialogue, laying the foundation for the communication on relevant issues in the follow-up.

Trump Says He Advised Putin to Implement a Short-Term Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine

On April 29, US President Trump stated in a public occasion that he had advised Russia to implement a short-term ceasefire with Ukraine during his phone call with Russian President Putin on the same day.

When meeting with astronauts performing the US manned lunar orbital mission at the White House on the same day, Trump revealed relevant information about the call to the media. He said that he had a "long conversation" with Putin and took the initiative to suggest that Russia and Ukraine implement a short-term ceasefire, and also admitted that "I think he may adopt this suggestion."

Trump said that the conversation with Putin was "very pleasant", and the content of the conversation involved many important issues, focusing on the Ukraine issue, and also "slightly touched on Iran-related matters". He further revealed that Putin proposed during the call that he hoped to participate in the process of resolving the Iranian enriched uranium issue to promote the end of the Iran-related military conflict. "But I said to him, I would rather see you focus your energy on ending the military conflict in Ukraine."

When asked by reporters which of the two military conflicts in Ukraine and Iran would end first, Trump replied, "I don't know, maybe their timetables are similar."

In addition, Trump also clearly stated that he supports the United Arab Emirates' decision to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
