Cailianshe reported on May 19 that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed "cautious optimism" attitude towards the Russian-Ukrainian peace talks on Sunday, but also warned that the United States "has no time to waste" when mediating peace in Russia and Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke with Rubio on Saturday.According to Rubio, Lavrov told him that Russia was drafting a ceasefire proposal.
"He said in our telephone communication that Russia will study a series of ideas and requirements in order to advance the ceasefire and further negotiations. So we will wait and hope that this is a document close enough to the Ukrainians' hope to achieve this and maybe resolve these differences," he said.
Meanwhile, Rubio reiterated the Trump administration's view that the war is "bloody, expensive, and destructive", while noting that the United States needs "patience" when promoting the Russian-Ukrainian peace talks, but "no time wasted" and warned Russia not to propose an unrealistic ceasefire proposal.
He said on the show: "Are they delaying us? This is what we are trying to figure it out. We will know soon. If the ideas in the above suggestions are practical and reasonable, then I think we know we are making progress. On the other hand, if the requirements in these suggestions are not realistic, then we will make different assessments."
"We don't have time to waste, so we don't want to get involved in this endless negotiation. Some progress has to be made and move forward. In the end, one of the factors that can break the deadlock, and perhaps the only factor that can be done, is the direct dialogue between President Trump and Putin," he added.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday that he will speak with Russian President Putin at 10 a.m. on the 19th of this month to discuss stop the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and trade-related issues.Russian President's Press Secretary Peskov later confirmed that Russian President Putin and US President Trump are preparing for a telephone talks.
Rubio, on the other hand, also stressed that the United States will play a new role as a possible peace agreement begins to form.
"We no longer fly around the world to try to arrange meetings. However, we will respond to the scheduled meetings and we have been saying that if there is a chance, we are willing to do everything we can to bring the meetings together," he said.
As Russia-Ukraine peace talks frequently hit a deadlock, Trump obviously gradually lost his patience.Trump warned over the weekend that the United States would impose new sanctions on Russia if an agreement cannot be reached on Ukraine.
"Honestly, if we can't reach an agreement, I will (implement sanctions). Now is at a critical moment, let's wait and see. This will be a devastating blow to Russia, because they are in economic hardship and oil prices are sluggish," he said.
However, Trump also said that he still believes Russian President Putin is ready to reach a deal to end the Ukrainian war, saying that "Putin is tired of it."
