The European Central Bank may launch a digital euro pilot in 2027

According to Foresight News, the Governing Council of the European Central Bank has decided to move forward with the next phase of the digital euro project, saying that if it can obtain approval from lawmakers in time, it may launch its digital currency pilot project in 2027. The ECB considers the project critical to the euro area's financial autonomy. The European Central Bank sees it as a strategic alternative to U.S.-dominated private payment methods such as credit cards and stablecoins. After four years of research and preparation, the ECB said it is now considering a pilot, meaning some digital euro transactions could take place as early as mid-2027, with a full launch two years later.
